The workers at the Canadian border are no longer planning to strike this week after their union reached a preliminary agreement with the federal government.

The Canadian Public Service Alliance said today, Tuesday, that it reached an agreement with the government regarding employees of the Canada Border Services Agency after working "around the clock".

If such an agreement had not been reached, the union was planning a strike involving more than 9,000 members starting at 12:01 AM on Friday.

Sharon DeSousa, the national president of the union, stated in a press release that the news on Tuesday is a "well-deserved victory".

The union stated that the details of the preliminary agreement will be published after being shared with members on Thursday.

In its press release, the Canadian Treasury Board stated that "long hours at the negotiating table" led to a deal that is "fair for employees and reasonable for Canadians".

The Treasury Board stated that the deal includes wage improvements and other benefits, but it would not share more details until later.

A similar strike three years ago nearly led to a stoppage of commercial traffic across the border and caused significant delays nationwide.

Union members will still need to vote to ratify and finalize the deal.
