The United Nations Security Council will vote today, Monday, on a U.S. draft resolution that supports the ceasefire proposal in Gaza and calls on Hamas to accept it, as announced by the South Korean presidency of the council.

The final version of the text, according to AFP, welcomes the ceasefire proposal announced by U.S. President Joe Biden on May 31.

It also affirms, unlike previous versions, that Israel has accepted the proposal, and calls on Hamas to accept it as well, urging both parties to implement its provisions fully without delay and without conditions.

The proposal, in its first phase, calls for a ceasefire for six weeks accompanied by an Israeli withdrawal from densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip, and the release of some Israeli and Palestinian prisoners.

Although Biden described the proposal as Israeli, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the continuation of the war until Hamas is destroyed.

Internal political divisions in Israel could complicate U.S. diplomatic efforts, according to the agency.

According to diplomatic sources, several council members expressed serious reservations about the two previous versions of the U.S. text, especially Algeria, which represents the Arab group, and Russia, which has veto power.
