More than 32,000 train passengers across the country will need to find new ways to work if a work stoppage occurs at Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. this week.
Transportation authorities stated that selected passenger lines operating on CPKC routes in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver will be suspended if the workers walk off the job at 12:01 AM Eastern Time on Thursday, alongside 3,200 other workers.
The railway said it would close its doors to staff unless a new contract is reached or Teamsters Canada Rail conference agrees to binding arbitration - a route the union has rejected.
The affected lines are the West Coast Express operated by TransLink in the Vancouver area, the Milton Line operated by Metrolinx and Hamilton GO station in the Greater Toronto Area, and the Candiac, Saint-Jerome, and Vaudreuil/Hudson lines operated by Exo in the Montreal area.
TransLink said it will provide updates to customers as the situation develops, Metrolinx directs passengers to alternative routes and stations, while Exo states it is working "on the possibility" of providing alternative bus service.
A phased shutdown of networks at CPKC and Canadian National Railway has already been implemented as negotiations between the companies and unions approach.
