In response to the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday evening, local time in the Canadian capital, that Ottawa would immediately impose retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of American goods in response to Trump's attempt to destroy the Canadian economy.
Trudeau noted that the 25% tariffs would target a total of $155 billion worth of products exported from the United States to Canada, including $30 billion starting Tuesday and $125 billion within 21 days, to give supply chains time to adjust.
In announcing the retaliatory measures, the Canadian Prime Minister criticized President Trump for "endangering" the historic relationship between the two countries by announcing the tariffs via an executive order on Saturday.
Trudeau remarked that Canada would not tolerate an attack from a country that was supposed to be an ally and friend.
It is worth mentioning that Justin Trudeau revealed that the two leaders had not spoken since Donald Trump took office on January 20. He said he tried to contact his American counterpart, but to no avail.
Let's buy Canadian goods
Justin Trudeau, who took the opportunity to urge citizens to buy Canadian products, warned that other non-tariff measures might follow. He stated in a press conference in Parliament on Saturday evening: "It's time to buy local products." Trudeau announced the federal government's gradual approach in a speech to Canadians from Parliament Hill, where he urged citizens to "choose Canada" when making purchases and travel plans.
He said: "This may mean choosing Canadian whiskey over Kentucky bourbon, or completely giving up orange juice from Florida. Unfortunately, the actions taken by the White House today have divided us rather than united us."
Real consequences for Americans
In his comments, Trudeau also pointed to the "real" consequences for Americans of Trump's decision to impose a broad 25% tariff on imports, as well as a 10% tariff on energy.
Trudeau addressed Americans: "The tariffs against Canada will jeopardize your jobs, potentially leading to the closure of American automotive assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities. Costs will rise for you, including food at grocery stores and gas at the pump."
Among the items that Trudeau says will soon begin to increase costs for American consumers are beer, wine, vegetables, clothing, footwear, appliances, furniture, and sporting goods. The Prime Minister also stated that Canada is considering "several" non-tariff measures related to energy and minerals.
The better path is partnership
In his speech, Trudeau pointed out that "if President Trump wants to herald a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us."
President Donald Trump implemented his threat on Saturday by signing an executive order to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, excluding oil and gas, which will be taxed at a rate of 10%.
Canadian consensus against Trump
The major announcement comes after weeks of anticipation and diplomatic efforts to avoid this moment, following Trudeau's meeting with his government and the premiers on Saturday to discuss the national and historic response.
Opposition leaders in Ottawa and provincial premiers unanimously condemned this American maneuver.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre is scheduled to provide details of his reaction in a press conference on Sunday morning.
