The largest and most advanced Chinese warship has begun its first naval test, paving the way for the country to enhance its naval power to project strength, amid American concerns about Beijing's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the warship "Fujian," which is the third Chinese aircraft carrier, tested the waters today, Wednesday.
The ship was officially launched and named in June 2022, according to Bloomberg news agency on Wednesday.
The aircraft carrier, which is 316 meters (1,037 feet) long, is equipped with three electromagnetic catapults to launch fighter jets, similar to the advanced system used by the latest American aircraft carrier, the "USS Gerald R. Ford," which is 337 meters long.
However, unlike the American fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the "Fujian" operates on conventional power, which may limit its range and deployment duration.
