The Moroccan official television reported that the number of earthquake victims that struck the country yesterday, Friday, has reached 2012 dead, while the number of injured has reached 2059, of which 1404 are serious injuries, according to an updated toll from the Moroccan Ministry of Interior as of ten o'clock in the evening on Saturday, September 9.
Most of the fatalities are concentrated in the provinces of Al-Haouz (1293) and Taroudant (452), the most affected areas south of Marrakech.
The Moroccan Interior Ministry statement also indicated that the authorities "continue their efforts to rescue and evacuate the injured and care for the victims, mobilizing all necessary resources."
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 struck the region of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco late last night, Friday.
The National Center for Scientific and Technical Research reported that the earthquake's epicenter is located in the province of Al-Haouz, southwest of the city of Marrakech, which is considered a major tourist destination.
This earthquake is the most violent that Morocco has experienced, according to the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research.
