The Syrian-Lebanese duo residing in Toronto releases a new song titled "Imagination"
Exploring the "hidden existence" of the immigrant
UAE, November 12, 2024: The conditions of immigrants in host countries involve many challenges and suffering. As showcased by the band "Kzdoura," composed of the Syrian/Lebanese duo residing in Toronto in their new song "Imagination," the difficult "hidden existence" of immigrants is considered one of the most prominent key issues in this context.
The phrase "hidden existence," with its deep humanitarian and social dimension, describes the memories of war, displacement problems, and the longing for the homeland they left, which moans behind and far from them, in contrast to a civil and social identity that is unguaranteed and vague in the host country.
The band "Kzdoura" presents this poignant message in their new song "Imagination." The lyrics of the song articulate the broken emotional state of the immigrant, while the music creates a connection that directly addresses the listener's senses and emotional depth.
This connection arises from a new Middle Eastern sound and a sensitive, delicate personality primarily influenced by the vibrant Turkish rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s. This song features a wonderful musical piece with Middle Eastern guitar, electric guitar, musical instruments, and a soulful saxophone, complemented by enchanting vocal melodies in Arabic with a Syrian dialect filled with feelings.
The song "Imagination" is the latest addition to the works of the creative band "Kzdoura." The cross-cultural Syrian-Lebanese duo has made a name for themselves by presenting blended Arabic songs characterized by nostalgia and renewal, often expertly mixing Arabic language with jazz, funk, soul, and trip-hop music that transcends borders and shortens distances.
The band was founded in the summer of 2020, led by Syrian singer-songwriter Layne Hammo, passionate about classical Arabic music, and talented Lebanese musician Johnny Abou Shakra, who trained in jazz and plays multiple musical instruments.
Songwriter Layne, who often declares that all her lyrics are inherently personal, expresses this feeling by saying: "Those of us who had to leave their homeland amid war are burdened with losses far from being singular; it is the loss of homeland, society, culture, and country, but rather a loss of self and identity. Based on the reactions we have received so far, we have succeeded in conveying that to our audience, which has allowed us to share an emotional experience with a profound humanitarian dimension, the depth of wounds and tragedy, and this is ultimately what music revolves around."
The band "Kzdoura" released their first album "Wain" in June 2022. It received support from major radio stations across North America, including CBC, CUIT, CKUA, and the podcast "Tracks from Abroad." The band is currently recording a new album expected to be released in March 2025.
