Manzur Jahani - The winners in various competitive sections of the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival were announced, and the film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" by director Mohammad Rasoulof won the Audience Award for Best European Film.

The closing ceremony of the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival was held, chaired by José Luis Rebordinos in the Kursaal hall in the city of San Sebastián, Spain. On behalf of the members of the jury for this prestigious cinematic event, the winners in various competitive sections were announced, and the Golden Shell and Silver Shell awards were presented to them.

The winners in the "Main Competition" section

The members of the jury in the "Main Competition" section of the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival are; Jaione Camborda, director from Spain - Chair of the Jury, Leila Guerriero, writer and journalist from Argentina, Fran Kranz, actor and director from America, Christos Nikou, director from Greece, Carole Scotta, producer from France, and Ulrich Seidl, director from Austria; and they announced their votes as follows:

Golden Shell Award

The Golden Shell award for this period of the festival was awarded to the 125-minute documentary film "Afternoons Alone" directed by Albert Serra, produced jointly by Spain, France, and Portugal.

Special Jury Award

The special jury award for this section was given to the film "The Last Showgirl," directed by Gia Coppola, produced in the United States.

Silver Shell Award for Best Director

The Silver Shell award for Best Director was awarded to Laura Carreira for her direction of the film "On Falling," a co-production between England and Portugal, and to Pedro Martín Calero for directing the film "The Wailing," a co-production between Spain, Argentina, and France.

Silver Shell Award for Best Performance in a Leading Role

The Silver Shell award for Best Leading Role went to Patricia López Arnaiz for her role in the film "Glimmers," directed by Pilar Palomero, produced in Spain.

Silver Shell Award for Best Supporting Actor

The Silver Shell award for Best Supporting Actor went to Pierre Lottin for his role in the film "When Fall Is Coming," directed by François Ozon, produced in France.

Jury Award for Best Screenplay

The jury award for Best Screenplay was shared between François Ozon and Philippe Piazzo for the French script "When Fall Is Coming."

Best Cinematography Award

The jury award for Best Cinematography was awarded to Piao Songri for the cinematography of the Chinese film "Bound in Heaven," directed by Huo Xin.

The winners in the "New Directors" competition

The members of the jury for the "New Directors" competition are; Philippe Bober, producer and broadcaster from France - Chair of the Jury, Eduardo Crespo, director and programmer from Argentina, Jessica Kiang, critic and programmer from Ireland, Izibene Oñederra, director from Spain, and Aulona Selmani, director from Switzerland; and they announced their votes as follows:

Best Director Award

The Best Director award went to Piet Baumgartner for his direction of the film "Bagger Drama," produced in Switzerland.

Special Mention from the Jury

The jury of this section praised Antón Álvarez for directing "The Flamenco Guitar of Yerai Cortés," produced in Spain.

Horizontes Award

The members of the jury for the Horizontes awards at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival are; Fernando Juan Lima, film critic from Argentina - Chair of the Jury, Pedro Hernández Santos, producer from Spain, and Valentina Maurel, director from Costa Rica; and they announced their voting as follows:

The Horizontes award was awarded to the film "Kill the Jockey" by director Luis Ortega, a co-production between Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Denmark, and the United States.

Zabaltegi-Tabakalera Award

The members of the jury for the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera award, a leading and experimental award at this prestigious international film event, are; Emilie Bujès, director of the Visions du Réel festival from Switzerland - Chair of the Jury, Santiago Loza, director from Argentina, and Hrönn Kristinsdóttir, producer from Iceland; and they announced their votes as follows:

The Zabaltegi-Tabakalera avant-garde and experimental award was awarded to the film "April" directed by Dea Kulumbegashvili, a co-production between France, Italy, and Georgia.

The film "Collective Monologue," directed by Jessica Sarah Rinland, produced in Argentina, was well received by the jury in this section.

San Sebastián Audience Award

The San Sebastián Audience Award for Best Film went to the French film "The Marching Band" directed by Emmanuel Courcol.

San Sebastián Audience Award for Best European Film

The San Sebastián Audience Award for Best European Film went to "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" by director Mohammad Rasoulof, a co-production between Germany, France, and Iran.

A showcase of the best films in the world

The 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival featured various sections including; the "Main Competition," two films in the "Donostia Award" section, the "New Directors" section, the "Horizontes Latinos" section, the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section, the Perlak section (a selection of the best feature films of the year that have not yet been shown in Spain), the "Nest" competition section (student films), the "Culinary Zinema" section, the "Short Film" competition section, the "Very Short" competition section, the Zinemira section (films produced in the Basque Country), the "Made in Spain" section, the Velodrome section, the "Movies for Kids" section, the Klasikoak section, the "Retrospective" section, the "On the Other Island" section, the FIPRESCI section (International Federation of Film Critics), the "Surprise Film" section, the EITB Gala section, the RTVE Galas section, interviews with filmmakers, specialized film meetings held in San Sebastián, Spain.
