The American "Associated Press" reported that U.S. intelligence is investigating how a gunman armed with an "AR-15" semi-automatic rifle was able to get close enough to open fire and injure former President Donald Trump during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The Secret Service, which is responsible for securing Trump, stated that the gunman fired several shots from an elevated position outside the rally venue on Saturday.
Secret Service agents killed the gunman, who has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks (20 years old) from Pennsylvania.
According to the Associated Press, the gunman fired several shots from "an elevated position outside the rally venue."
Analysis by the agency of more than 10 videos and photos from the campaign rally site, along with satellite images of the location, shows that the shooter was able to astonishingly get close to the stage.
The site where the body of the attacker was found is less than 150 meters away from where Trump was speaking.
Additionally, Republican lawmakers stated that they will begin quick investigations into how the sniper seemingly evaded Secret Service agents and climbed to the roof of a building near where Trump was speaking and fired several shots before being killed, according to Reuters.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, stated in a statement posted on social media that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other officials will appear before a hearing in the House as soon as possible.
