The U.S. Federal Appeals Court upheld a law requiring TikTok to sell its American assets or face a ban by early 2025, amid fears of a threat to U.S. national security due to its ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance.
The court rejected TikTok's appeal, which considered the law a violation of freedom of expression. The company announced its intention to escalate the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that the ban constitutes censorship of American users.
The U.S. government claims that the app could be used to collect user data or spread propaganda, while TikTok asserts its independence and data storage within the United States. If the appeal fails, the digital landscape may witness a radical shift impacting users and creators.
