The York Regional Police said a six-year-old boy has died from his injuries after being hit by a school bus in a residential area in Vaughan this Wednesday morning.

The collision occurred on Pierre Burton Boulevard and Kleinburg Summit Way, near Kipling Street and Kirby Road, around 8 a.m.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, but police told reporters that the bus driver remained at the scene.

James Dixon told reporters on Wednesday morning, "They are being very cooperative and are being assessed by EMS for the terrible scenario they were involved in."

"We are still looking into all the events that led to this horrific outcome."

Dixon could not specify how many children were on the bus at the time of the collision, but confirmed that the bus was in the area picking up children to go to school.

Dixon stated that he could not comment on whether speed may have contributed to the collision but noted that investigators are looking into all possible factors.

He added, "Something like this takes a lot of time to piece together. We will be here for a long time."

Dixon mentioned that he had not spoken to the family but described the situation as "a tragedy that ruins everything for everyone," and, "obviously, something like this is extremely horrific."

"I haven't interacted with the family, but I can't imagine what they are going through."

Officers are asking residents in the area to come forward if they have any security footage from the time of the collision.

Dixon said, "We have victim services and peer support available for officers, parents, teachers, and children who may be affected by this."

One resident of the neighborhood said he witnessed the incident and that the boy was running to catch the bus when he was struck.

The man said, "The bus driver didn't see him, and there were already many children on the bus at the time of the collision; they were screaming."

In a social media post, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca expressed condolences to the family of the young boy who was killed.

He wrote, "The City of Vaughan is in mourning after the tragic death of a young boy who was struck by a vehicle in Kleinburg."

"There are no words to express our sympathy and condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of this child as they grieve this unimaginable loss."
