Independent New Brunswick MP Dominic Cardy has officially launched a new federal political party, aiming to gain the support of disillusioned conservative liberal voters.

Cardy stated that the future Canadian party will be a fiscally responsible liberal party and provide a new political home for Canadians who are tired of extremism on both the right and the left.

Cardy said at a press conference on Wednesday in Ottawa, "Canadians have been asked to play a political game."

Cardy added that on the left, the social programs needed by Canadians have seen increased spending with minimal returns.

"And on the right, we are supposed to find financial discipline," and "yet, often, there is an approach where the most vulnerable are blamed for their plight, with selfishness masquerading as freedom, happily controlling government resources to the wealthy and policies over our bodies and our rooms."

He vowed to ensure that the future Canadian party will be for all Canadians, promising that we will be brave, competent, and evidence-based.

On July 22, Canada recognized the future Canadian party as an eligible political party, and it was officially registered on August 8.

Cardy noted that the party will nominate candidates in the upcoming by-elections in Winnipeg and Montreal scheduled for September.

Cardy is a former Conservative in New Brunswick and served in Premier Blaine Higgs' cabinet as Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development.

He resigned from the cabinet in 2022, publishing a strong resignation letter accusing the Premier of consolidating power, creating a disrespectful work environment, and refusing to make evidence-based decisions.

Before his work with the Conservatives in New Brunswick, Cardy served as the leader of the New Democratic Party in New Brunswick from 2011 to 2016.

The future Canadian party is the successor to the Conservatives in the Ice Centre (CIC), a political lobbying group founded in 2022 amid the Conservative leadership race by former Conservative leadership candidate Rick Peterson.

Cardy served on the advisory council of the Ice Centre.

The future Canadian party's website includes a temporary policy framework that focuses, in part, on personal freedoms, open government, and responsible spending. The party insists that the temporary policy framework is not an official platform and will be added to and amended.

Cardy told reporters, before directing criticism at both Conservative Leader Poilievre and Liberal Trudeau: "The future Canadian party proposes to move not to the left, not to the right, but forward."

He added, "I was shocked last week when Mr. Poilievre, the leader of the Conservatives, came out and said he rejected the promise to increase defense spending to 2% [of GDP], saying he was riding on the shoulders of the American MAGA movement and that kind of politics is not Canadian."

"Similarly, when the Liberals talk about how everything is fine and rosy, they are living in the 1990s. We need to have a realistic approach to politics in 2024 based on Canadian needs."

A spokesperson for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated to CTV News, "Conservatives are not paying much attention to what the former leader of the New Democratic Party is saying, nor do Canadians care."

"If Canadians want to get rid of Trudeau's disastrous government and the punitive carbon tax, supported by Jagmeet Singh's and Dominic Cardy's friends in the New Democratic Party, voting for the commonsense Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre is the only option. We will abolish the tax, build homes, fix the budget, and stop crime."
