Relatives of a man from Mississauga said they are "desperate for answers" after one of their loved ones went missing in Greece more than a month ago.

His brother's wife, Erika Campos, told CP24.com that Philip Ziaja, 38, last communicated with his family and employer on July 12.

She said he was supposed to go hiking the next day on Mount Olympus, but he hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Campos, a travel enthusiast who describes herself as a digital nomad, said Ziaja left Canada for Greece on July 7 to work remotely and do some outdoor sightseeing. She said her brother-in-law was expected to return to Canada in September after spending a few weeks in Poland.

Campos said about her brother-in-law, who began working and traveling abroad seriously after the pandemic: "He was living his best life and then suddenly disappeared." "Philip was very happy about this trip."

Campos said that while Ziaja was not one to post much on social media and did not communicate with them daily, he would reach out to his family about once a week to let them know what he was doing. She added that it is "extremely unusual" for her brother-in-law to be isolated from the outside world for several weeks.

She said they started to feel concerned when Ziaja did not call them on July 20 to wish a happy birthday to his one-year-old son, who is his only nephew.

Their concerns were confirmed when they received a call from his employer on July 26 informing them that he had not logged into his work computer for two weeks.

Campos said, "That’s when we knew something was really wrong."

On that day, Ziaja's family began contacting Canadian and Greek authorities to report his disappearance.

The last contact Philip Ziaja, 38, a resident of Mississauga, had with his family and employer was on July 12. He traveled to Greece on July 7 and was expected to return to Canada in September.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) confirmed to CP24.com that it is "aware of a Canadian missing in Greece."

Global Affairs Canada said: "Consular officials are in contact with the family to provide assistance. Due to privacy considerations, further information cannot be disclosed."

Ziaja's family has also been in touch with police in Greece. His brother's wife said they searched the Airbnb in Thessaloniki where Ziaja was staying and found all his belongings except for his mobile phone and the items he was wearing and carrying on the day he went missing. She said the unit is now held by Greek Police Services (HPS).

She noted that a missing person alert was also issued in Greece in the days following Ziaja's disappearance, leading to a few potential sightings of him, but nothing concrete has come from that.

Campos said: "We're just afraid that something might have happened to him, or maybe he was robbed, or perhaps he experienced some kind of trauma that affected his ability to seek help," adding that they are also worried that Ziaja may have fallen victim to a string of recent tourist disappearances in Greece.

"It's been a long time. It's been a month since Philip disappeared. (...) We just want to know what is happening."

Ziaja has brown eyes, stands six feet two inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds, and has short brown hair. He speaks Polish and English, is a vegetarian, animal lover, and animal rights advocate, in addition to being a software engineer.
