Summer McIntosh won Canada’s first medal at the Olympics in Paris, a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle event.
Australia's Ariarne Titmus defended her Olympic title with a time of 3:57.49, ahead of McIntosh, who recorded 3:58.37, and the bronze medalist Katie Ledecky from the United States, who clocked 4:00.86.
McIntosh nearly won her first Olympic medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle race when she was 14 years old three years ago in Tokyo, finishing in fourth place.
The swimmer from Toronto is the world record holder in the women’s 400-meter individual medley. McIntosh will compete in this event on Monday.
100-meter butterfly champion Maggie Mac Neil from London, Ontario, also qualified for the final of this event.
She tied for fourth place in the semifinals.
