The CEO of Bayern Munich, Jan Christian Driesen, announced that the club is considering legal action against the Canadian Football Association, following the injury of its Canadian star Alphonso Davies, who suffered a torn cruciate ligament during his international appearance.

Davies' injury occurred during Canada’s match against the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League, which angered officials at the Bavarian club who felt that the player did not receive adequate medical care before and after the match.

Driesen said in a statement to the German newspaper Bild:

“We demand that the Canadian Federation conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of what happened, and we explicitly reserve our full right to take legal action.”

Allegations of medical negligence

Driesen criticized the Canadian team’s handling of the player's injury, saying:

“Sending a player with a broken knee on a 12-hour international flight without a thorough medical examination is in our opinion gross negligence and a clear violation of due medical care.”

He added:

“Davies' participation, who was already suffering from muscle issues, in a match of little sporting importance, is incomprehensible. Canada has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup as the host nation, and it was unacceptable to risk a player of Davies' caliber.”

A painful sports loss

Driesen described Davies' absence as “a severe blow to the club,” despite the ability to replace him numerically, noting that his impact extends to the technical balance of the team at a critical stage of the season.

He also pointed out that the club is also dealing with the injury of defender Dayot Upamecano, who sustained a tear in his knee joint while representing France against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.

Criticism of the international break

Driesen concluded his statements by saying:

“Once again, the international break in March demonstrates its dangers to clubs, especially those competing for titles, as is the case with Bayern Munich.”
