The Romanian government obtains a court ruling against a Canadian mining company

After a legal dispute that lasted for several years between a Canadian mining company and the Romanian government, the latter announced the end of the judicial round in its favor.

The Canadian mining company seeks financial compensation, in exchange for the failed plans to open the gold and silver mine, and Gabriel Resources also seeks financial compensation of $4.4 billion from Romania, which owns a 20% stake in the Roșia Montană mining project.

It is an area containing some of the largest gold deposits in Europe, and the Romanian government withdrew its support for the project in 2014. The government stated that the ruling issued by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, based in Washington.

Resources issued a payment of its legal costs related to the arbitration case launched by the Canadian mining company, during 2015.

On the other hand, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said that it is unjust for Romanian citizens to bear and incur high costs, and he thanked the team of lawyers after the ruling was issued.
