Most of Canada is expected to experience very hot weather in August, interspersed with periods of cooler than usual temperatures, according to The Weather Network indicators.
A report released today, Monday, by The Weather Network stated that near-normal or above-normal temperatures are expected this month, although cooler temperatures "are awaited across most of northern Canada".
The report says: "There will be significant breaks from the heat and even the possibility of a quick respite of cooler weather which would be a precursor to what the upcoming season will bring."
Many areas in Canada experienced near or above-normal temperatures in July, with much of northern Canada being "exceptionally hot" and eastern Newfoundland "very hot," according to The Weather Network, although not at the level of severe heatwaves seen in British Columbia last summer.
Until then, Dave Phillips, Chief Climate Scientist at Environment Canada, told CTV News on July 18 that "the hottest part of the summer has not yet arrived," as July and August "are hotter than usual."
The Weather Network report says hot weather is expected to dominate from the southern regions to Atlantic Canada in August, with a cooler pattern developing across much of northern Canada, which may push southward and "break up" the heat across southern parts of Canada.
The report says the hottest weather is expected to start shifting westward in the second week of August, leading to near-seasonal temperatures across Atlantic Canada and "few" periods of cooler weather.
Ontario and Quebec may also experience a prolonged period of moderate heat in mid-August lasting between five to ten days before the return of hot weather in late August through September, according to The Weather Network.
In British Columbia, weather is expected to return to "cool and moderate weather," the report says, with periods of hotter weather expected from mid to late August, although not to the same highs experienced by the province in the last week of July.
