Halifax - Residents of Atlantic Canada and the eastern edge of Quebec have been warned to prepare for hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall as Hurricane Fiona continues on its path to strike the east coast late Friday.

The Canadian Environment Ministry warns of the possibility of severe and destructive storms, coastal storms, and heavy rainfall as Fiona merges with a low-pressure trough and transforms into a strong post-tropical storm on Saturday.

The administration states that prolonged power outages and structural damage resulted from similar storms, adding that buildings under construction will be particularly vulnerable.

Heavy rainfall is expected Thursday night with possible flooding in some areas. Winds will increase Friday night and peak on Saturday, although the Canadian Hurricane Center has not yet predicted wind speeds or rainfall totals.

Meanwhile, residents are asked to prepare emergency kits containing enough food and water for up to 72 hours. Additionally, residents are urged to charge their mobile phones, secure outdoor furniture, and refrain from traveling.
