The union representing 55,000 education workers across Ontario will end their mass strike on Tuesday after Premier Doug Ford offered to repeal the legislation that made the strike illegal.

Laura Walton, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, said the education workers will return to schools on Tuesday, adding that Ford agreed to put his commitment to repeal the legislation that made the strike by education workers in Ontario illegal in writing.

Also, Walton said at a press conference Monday afternoon, "We received and can confirm that the Premier will introduce and support legislation to repeal Bill 28 in its entirety."

Additionally, Walton stated that Ford agreed to take this commitment a step further and remove the law retroactively. It was introduced in the legislature last Monday by Education Minister Stephen Lecce and passed late Thursday afternoon, making the "Keeping Students in Class Act" illegal for CUPE education workers to strike under the provision despite parts of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms being overturned. It also imposed a four-year contract on them.
