Canadian Public Security Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, confirmed Tuesday evening before the House of Commons in the Canadian Parliament that we "will never accept cartels controlling the border."
LeBlanc also added that he "fully agrees" with the Bloc Québécois party, a political party that condemned human trafficking on the Canada-US border since parliamentary sessions resumed - at the beginning of the week.
The minister also revealed that organized crime groups, including Mexican gangs, are fully involved in Quebec in covert crossings of people into the United States, which have increased in recent months.
For his part, Bloc MP Réal Fortin said: "It is very serious." "The federal government cannot allow criminal groups to exploit immigrants."
MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe said: "Ottawa cannot allow these people to risk imprisonment in Canada and the United States."
Quebec had denounced this position last week. François Legault's government said at the time: "Someone needs to wake up in Ottawa."
Minister LeBlanc also said he "has full confidence" in the work of border officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to combat "organized crime."
LeBlanc also confirmed that he discussed this issue with his Quebec counterpart François Bonnardel. He added that "Prime Minister [Justin Trudeau] raised the issue of illegal immigration with the President of Mexico," referring to Justin Trudeau's trip to California to attend an economic meeting this week.
He also said that other "discussions" are currently taking place between Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and her counterparts in the United States and Mexico.
