American media reported yesterday, Tuesday, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Washington on Wednesday, in his first foreign trip since Russian forces began their attack on his country on February 24.

The media also said that Zelensky will visit the White House where President Joe Biden intends to announce a new weapons package for Kyiv, including for the first time Patriot missiles, noting that the Ukrainian president may also deliver a speech before the US Congress.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sent a message to members of the House on Tuesday urging them to attend "in person" a session to be held on Wednesday evening, without disclosing the nature of this session.

Pelosi wrote in her message to the representatives: "Please attend on Wednesday evening for a session that will focus particularly on democracy."

Also, Congress is preparing to pass the federal budget bill, which includes new aid for Ukraine worth $44.9 billion.

The Patriot missiles that Washington intends to provide to Kyiv have proven their capabilities extensively in recent years in Iraq and the Gulf, and are capable of significantly limiting the effectiveness of Russian strikes on Ukraine.

Since Russian forces began their attack on his country ten months ago, Zelensky has never left Ukrainian territory, dedicating all his time to leading the war effort and coordinating political, diplomatic, and humanitarian activities.

Since the war began, Zelensky has spoken with leaders of many countries and addressed parliaments around the world, but all these conversations were conducted via video or phone.

His visit to Washington represents an acknowledgment of the leading role the United States has played in enabling his country to confront Russian forces.
