A legal file revealed the leak of parts of the source code belonging to Twitter, and the social media platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk is seeking information about the person responsible for this leak.

Reuters agency mentioned that "various excerpts" of the source code for the Twitter system used to operate the platform online were published by a user called "FreeSpeechEnthusiast" on the "Github" website, a platform owned by Microsoft for sharing code for software development.

The "Github" website explained that it deleted the code on Friday at Twitter's request, and no details were provided about how long the code was left posted, nor about the scope or impact of the leak.

Twitter also requested a court in California to issue an order to the "Github" company to provide all identification information associated with the username "FreeSpeechEnthusiast".

The "Github" website did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on whether it provided such information, nor did it comment on how long Twitter's source code was available to the public.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk - who spoke to The New York Times - is concerned that the information derived from the stolen code could enhance future hacking efforts against the platform, either by revealing new features or vulnerabilities or by allowing parties access to Twitter user data.

The newspaper also mentioned that according to sources inside the company familiar with the internal investigation of the leak, Twitter executives strongly suspect that the leak came from a disgruntled employee who had left during the past year.

These suspicions come as a result of layoffs that occurred after Musk bought the platform in October of last year in a deal valued at $44 billion, and he proceeded to lay off 80% of the company's employees.
