At least 177 environmental activists died around the world in 2022, according to a report released today, Wednesday, by the non-governmental organization "Global Witness."
The London-based organization stated today upon releasing its annual report that the most dangerous country for environmental activists was Colombia, where 60 activists were killed last year, followed by Brazil and Mexico.
The report concluded that 88% of environmental activists who died in 2022 were in Latin America.
The report noted that despite the difficulty in determining the motives behind the killings, the organization was able to link agricultural activities to the deaths of 10 people in 2022, while mining was linked to 8 murders, followed by logging, which was associated with 4 murders.
The organization pointed out that there has been no progress in identifying those responsible for most of the killings.
Shruity Suresh, who works with the organization, stated that for a long time, those responsible for deadly attacks against environmental activists have evaded accountability.
The organization reported that between 2012 and 2022, 1910 activists were killed, which is equivalent to one murder every two days.
