The Cuban foreign minister apologized to a family in the Montreal area after they sent the wrong body following the death of a family member.
Faraj Jargour, 68, died on March 22 in Varadero, Cuba during a family vacation.
The family also paid $10,000 to have his body returned to Laval, Quebec with them, but when they went to identify the father, there was a Russian man who was about 20 years younger in the coffin.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez wrote on X: "I spoke by phone with Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly regarding an unfortunate incident involving the transfer of the body of a Canadian citizen who died in Cuba," and I apologized to the relatives and friends of the deceased.
The family was profoundly shocked after the tragic incident and is still waiting to find out what happened to Jargour's body.
Joly described the situation on social media as "unimaginable," adding that "Canada will continue to assist the Jargour family until this situation is resolved."
