The Government of Jamaica has announced the recognition of the State of Palestine, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith.

Smith stated following discussions in her country's Cabinet: "We continue to advocate for the two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the longstanding conflict, ensure Israel's security, and support the dignity and rights of Palestinians. By recognizing the State of Palestine, Jamaica strengthens its call for a peaceful solution."

She clarified that "the decision aligns with Jamaica's strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which aims to foster mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between nations, as well as recognition of the rule of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination," according to the news site "Russia Today."

She continued: "We have concerns about the war in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis, alongside the government’s call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through diplomatic dialogue rather than military action."

Smith reiterated Jamaica's support for an immediate ceasefire and increasing humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip, particularly for women and children who suffer daily.

She noted that her country supports all efforts aimed at de-escalation and achieving lasting peace in the region, urging all parties to consider the dire consequences of further conflict and to commit to diplomatic solutions that ensure their safety and sovereignty.

With Jamaica's recognition, the number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine has risen to 142 countries.
