After decades of efforts, a memorial for the victims of the Nazi genocide against the Roma and Sinti communities in the Czech Republic was inaugurated today, Tuesday.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said at the inauguration ceremony of the memorial in the village of "LeTy", about 70 kilometers south of Prague, "We must honestly acknowledge that this took an extremely long time."
During the Nazi occupation during World War II, there was a labor and detention camp for Roma in a remote location in LeTy.
In audio and video recordings, witnesses share their memories of the persecution of the Roma under Nazi occupation. A "Route of Remembrance" awaits visitors outside.
The memorial is set to open to the public for the first time on May 12th.
