The majority of Canadians will watch the Olympic Games in Paris this summer in some way, but only a small percentage will follow closely, according to a new national survey.

The polling company "Leger" asked more than 1,500 people about their opinions on the upcoming summer games and their general perceptions of the Olympics in an online survey conducted from July 12 to 14.

Nine percent of participants said they would closely follow the Olympic Games, while 43 percent said they would follow some events.

Meanwhile, 27 percent responded that they “probably won’t” plan to watch the games, and 16 percent said they “definitely won’t,” while 4 percent said they don’t know.

No margin of error can be assigned to the survey, which was weighted to account for demographic differences, as online surveys are not considered true random samples.

The Canadian team consists of 338 athletes, including 142 returning Olympians and 38 who have previously reached the podium.

The team features swimmer Penny Oleksiak - Canada’s most decorated Olympian with seven medals - and sprinter Andre De Grasse, who is six medals behind.

The games officially start with the opening ceremony on July 26 and end on August 11.

Leger asked how those likely to watch the Olympic Games would do so. Sixty-five percent said they would watch events on television, while both social media and online streaming services received 24% of responses. A small faction of six percent said they would listen via radio.

Among participants over the age of 55, 81% said they are more likely to watch on television. Younger people prefer other media, as 44% of those aged 18 to 34 said they follow social media, while 39% chose online streaming.

CBC, the Canadian broadcasting rights holder, plans for 22 hours of Olympic programming each day. Coverage will be available on traditional television, the CBC website, the app, the Gem streaming service, Radio-Canada, and through partner networks TSN, RDS, and Sportsnet.

The survey also asked whether Canadians would like to see an Olympic Games held in their country in the future. Over half, 51 percent, answered yes, while 33 percent opposed it, and 17 percent did not know.

A Canadian city has hosted the Olympics three times. Montreal hosted the summer games in 1976, while Calgary hosted the winter Olympics in 1988, and Vancouver hosted the winter games in 2010.

Among survey participants who want another Olympic Games in Canada, 37 percent preferred a winter games, while 33 percent answered summer.

The vast majority believe the Olympic Games benefit the host city's economy, with 72 percent responding that the games will have a “very positive” or “somewhat positive” impact.

Amid rising venue costs and climate change, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) may consider rotating host cities for the winter games with fewer mountain cities realistically able to host. Vancouver, which hosted mountain events in Whistler, British Columbia, is viewed as a contender city.
