Washington is set to provide Israel with $3.5 billion to spend on American weapons and military equipment, following months of earmarking by the U.S. Congress, according to reports from CNN, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The State Department notified lawmakers on Thursday evening that the government intends to release billions in foreign military funding for Israel, with the money coming from a $14.1 billion package in additional funding for Israel that was passed in April.

According to CNN, the funds will not be used for the immediate purchase of weapons, but to pay for systems currently being built and expected to be delivered in the near future.

In a separate context, the U.S. State Department announced that the United States has determined that the alleged human rights violations committed by the Nitzach Yehuda Battalion "have been effectively addressed" following a review of new information provided by Israel.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in an email to the "Times of Israel" that following this decision, the unit in question can continue to receive American security assistance. The United States had called for a criminal investigation after soldiers from the battalion were accused of being involved in the death of a 78-year-old American-Palestinian man.

Prior to receiving new information in April, Washington was reportedly intending to classify the unit under a U.S. law that prohibits military assistance to those committing gross human rights violations.
