Canso, Nova Scotia - A missing fisherman was found off the coast of Nova Scotia after a tragic accident during a rescue mission on Sunday morning when the person fell into the ocean while being transferred to a Coast Guard vessel.
The Canadian Search and Rescue Service and Coast Guard have not provided an update on the person's condition since the morning, other than noting that the fisherman was transferred to the hospital for treatment.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax said the incident began at around 5 a.m. on Saturday, after the fishing vessel MuckTown Girl requested assistance due to engine trouble when it was located 160 kilometers southeast of Canso.
A tweet on Saturday evening stated that an attempt by a Coast Guard ship to tow the vessel to Mulgrave, N.S. failed, and shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday the crew abandoned the boat and boarded a lifeboat when the fishing boat began to take on water.
The Rescue Coordination Center said in a tweet on Twitter that four crew members were transferred from the lifeboat to the Coast Guard ship Jean Goodwill, but one fisherman fell into the water, although it did not specify exactly when that happened.
Around 2 p.m., a tweet stated that a Cormorant helicopter was sent to search for the missing fisherman and had located the fisherman and crew, and the fisherman was transported to the hospital onboard.
Tweets from the rescue center say that all crew members of the fishing vessel were wearing survival suits.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center referred questions to Fisheries and Oceans and the Coast Guard, who did not respond to communications for comment.
