Man involved in an accident before allegedly fleeing, punches a police officer and commits an "indecent act"
A man from Mississauga faces nine charges after a series of alleged crimes inside and around the Danforth neighborhood in Toronto late Monday that included a head-on collision, violent confrontations with police and neighbors, and an "indecent act."
The events began just before 8:30 p.m. on Danforth Street where the 29-year-old Mississauga man was behind the wheel of a BMW, intermittently driving and speeding.
The police stated that he crossed the center line near Jones Street and crashed head-on with an oncoming Hyundai. The man then fled the scene leaving behind a 22-year-old passenger.
The police stated in a press release today, Tuesday, that the passenger went to the hospital with minor injuries, while the 39-year-old Hyundai driver was taken to hospital with "serious life-altering injuries."
The man then made his way on foot to the area of Seymour and Chudell streets. There he is said to have encountered a father taking his children out of a parked car. According to the police, "without provocation, the driver punched the father in the back of the head" before turning his attention to one of the children. The police said that neighbors, including an off-duty officer, heard the shouting and came to help. The police said the father suffered minor injuries and the children "did not sustain physical injuries."
The police said in a press release: "As neighbors approached, the driver backed away but then proceeded to drop his pants, expose himself, and commit an indecent act." Then a duty officer arrived, and the man punched him in the face, according to police. The man then tried to flee again, but the officer and neighbors chased him off duty and eventually tried to arrest him. Finally, a second officer on duty arrived, and the man was apprehended.
The police added that he was then arrested. The officer who was punched in the face and the off-duty officer were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The alleged perpetrator faces nine charges, including: dangerous operation (of a vehicle) causing bodily harm. assault causing bodily harm. indecent act. aggravated assault on a peace officer.
He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning. Anyone with further information about the events is asked to contact police or leave anonymous information with Crime Stoppers.
