A man died after an airplane tire collided with a car on the Queen Elizabeth Way highway Tuesday afternoon. It happened in the eastbound lanes near Winston Churchill Boulevard on the Mississauga-Oakville border.

The police said they are still looking for the car that the tire detached from. OPP Sergeant.

Kerry Schmidt spoke with CP24 from the scene and described the incident as "tragic." Schmidt said, "We have a man dead as a result of a collision with a tire that came off a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction."

Schmidt said the tire hit the first vehicle that the deceased man was in before bouncing off and striking two other vehicles.

No other injuries have been reported at this time, but the police are following up with witnesses to locate the car they believe lost the tire.

Halton Police reported that eastbound lanes of the QEW are now closed as the investigation into the incident begins.

The eastbound ramp from Ford Drive has also been closed, and police are asking drivers to consider alternative routes due to "heavy traffic congestion" in the area.

The Ministry of Transportation confirmed a death as a result of the accident, although it is currently unclear whether the person was the driver or a passenger of the car that hit the tire.
