A quarter century of cancer data is now available in a report jointly issued by the Canadian Cancer Society, Statistics Canada, and the Canadian Public Health Agency on Tuesday.

The 2022 Canadian Cancer Statistics report on cancer prevalence highlights the most common types of cancer over a 25-year period between 1994 and 2018, as well as the populations most likely to be diagnosed.

As the number of people diagnosed with or living after cancer in Canada rises, the demand for support and care for cancer patients increases, with more than 1.5 million Canadians living with cancer according to new data.

Likewise, the report aims to help identify gaps in healthcare and cancer patient care, and provide some evidence on how to allocate resources to close these gaps, according to Geoff Latimer, Director General of Health Statistics at Statistics Canada. Latimer added in a press statement released Tuesday: "Accurate and timely data on cancer prevalence in Canada is critical to understanding the disease's impact on our society and healthcare system. The data is invaluable in evaluating cancer outcomes, measuring our progress, and identifying areas for improvement."

According to the report, in 2022, genital organ cancer and colorectal cancer are widespread across Canada with a wide margin. However, in the period from 1994 to 2018, breast cancer accounted for 19.4 percent of all diagnoses, while prostate cancer represented 17.8 percent, and colorectal cancer 11.3 percent.

Also, melanoma accounted for 5.5 percent of diagnoses, thyroid cancer represents 5 percent, bladder cancer 4.6 percent, Hodgkin lymphoma 4.5 percent, uterine cancer 4.4 percent, lung and bronchial cancer 4.1 percent, kidney and renal pelvis cancer 3.2 percent, and all other types of cancer combined 20.2 percent.
