Toronto – Arab Canada News

The city of Toronto announced that vital maintenance work on five bridges along the Gardiner Expressway will officially begin next week, which will lead to long-term lane closures that may last several months, amid warnings to drivers of significant traffic delays.

The aim of this work is to implement comprehensive structural repairs to several bridges extending from Dominion Street to Dexter Street, as part of the city's ongoing plan to maintain the safety and sustainability of vital infrastructure.

What awaits drivers?

Starting Monday, April 8, the westbound lanes of the highway will progressively close, with limited lanes remaining open for traffic. This is expected to lead to traffic congestion, especially during peak morning and evening periods.

Authorities have urged drivers to:

• Plan their trips in advance and use alternative routes.

• Rely on public transportation whenever possible.

• Follow real-time updates through official navigation apps and the city’s websites.

Importance of the project

The city stated in a press release that the maintenance work is essential to avoid future structural risks and to extend the life of the highway, which serves as a major traffic artery connecting downtown to the western areas.

When will the work be completed?

The first phase of repairs is expected to continue until the fall of 2025, as part of a larger project that spans several years and includes advanced maintenance and structural updates along the Gardiner corridor.
