Ottawa – The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will officially move to "Rideau Cottage," the current temporary residence for prime ministers, after it was decided to take the official residence at 24 Sussex Drive out of service for structural safety reasons.
The agency confirmed, in a statement issued recently, that the historic property located at 24 Sussex is no longer suitable for habitation due to its deteriorating condition, describing the decision to close it as “necessary and urgent” to protect public safety. The building had suffered for decades from neglect and a buildup of maintenance issues, making it unfit to host any senior government officials.
Carney and his family will reside at “Rideau Cottage,” a home located on the grounds of the Governor General's residence at “Rideau Hall,” which was used by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his tenure.
It is worth noting that the federal government has not yet made a decision regarding the future of 24 Sussex Drive, and whether it will be restored or replaced, amid calls for a long-term solution that preserves the symbolic value of the residence while meeting modern safety and efficiency standards.
