The American newspaper "Axios" reported today, Wednesday, that an Israeli security official said the Israeli government is considering a proposal for a two-week ceasefire in Gaza. The official explained that the proposal includes the release of 6 Israeli detainees.
In the same context, the Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz" reported that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed the families of the Israeli prisoners held in Gaza that the U.S. administration is working on a limited exchange deal, which includes a temporary ceasefire and the release of less than 10 detainees.
On another note, the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Akhbar" stated that Egypt is awaiting a response to a proposal it submitted to Israel last Sunday regarding a "temporary ceasefire" that allows for the recovery of some prisoners held by the resistance. According to the newspaper, Egyptian officials discussed the proposal extensively with the head of the Israeli "Shabak," Ronen Bar, during his visit to Cairo, but leaks of initiative details from the Israeli side caused Egyptian discontent, especially since Cairo did not present the plan in detail to the resistance.
An Egyptian source told the newspaper "Al-Akhbar" that the proposal was presented by the head of the Egyptian intelligence, Hassan Rashad, in his first direct intervention in this file after assuming his position recently. The source explained that Egypt aims through this proposal to alleviate the pressure in northern Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the sector, under the conviction that progress in negotiations will only occur after the U.S. elections.
The source added that Egypt has extensively discussed its initiative with the United States, and that the head of the "Shabak" may visit Cairo again next week. He confirmed that Egypt continues to exercise "restraint" in dealing with the Rafah crossing issue and Israel's violations in the "Philadelphi" corridor, while a new team from Egyptian intelligence works on preparing several scenarios to manage the file gradually.
The source indicated that the Egyptian intelligence preferred to postpone discussions about the contentious points with Israel for the time being, focusing on achieving a temporary ceasefire to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with a request for support from the UAE to pressure the Israeli government and enhance coordination with other Arab parties regarding ceasefire tracks.
