At least five children were taken to the hospital after a school bus overturned into a ditch near Woodstock, Ontario, on Tuesday morning.

The collision involved a single vehicle in a rural area on Dodge Line on Cotherbert Road, southeast of the village of Sweaburg.

Emergency responders told CTV News London that they were called to the scene of the accident around 8:15 a.m.

Ontario Police said in a social media post that about 40 passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Sergeant Ed Sanchuk explained that one child was pinned under the vehicle. They have since been airlifted to the trauma unit at the Victoria campus of London Health Sciences Centre.

He added that four other children were also taken to the hospital for treatment of “unknown injuries.”

Sanchuk noted that all the children’s injuries are classified as “minor” in nature.

He added that the bus driver was also injured. The police described his injuries as minor as well.

Sanchuk said a person from a nearby farm ran to the scene shortly after the collision and helped get all the students out.

"I just want to take this opportunity as well to say thank you to the Good Samaritan who came to help all the children who were on that bus this morning,” he said. “They got these children out and played an active role in getting these children safely out of that bus,” noting that all parents and caregivers of the children on the bus have been notified of the accident.

Roads in the area are currently closed as police investigate, and drivers are asked to avoid the area.
