D'Angelo Russell scored 25 points and added seven assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 128-111 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.
LeBron James scored 23 points and nine assists to lead Los Angeles to their second consecutive win (43-33). Anthony Davis recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
R.J. Barrett from Mississauga, Ontario, led all scorers with 28 points, adding six assists and six boards, as Toronto (23-52) lost their 14th straight game. Emmanuel Quickley scored 20 points and six assists.
Both players returned to the Raptors lineup after missing several games while grieving the loss of their loved ones.
Quickley took time off following the death of his uncle Sean Hamilton from cancer on March 20 and missed six games. Barrett, whose brother Nathan Barrett, 19, died on March 14, missed nine games.
The Raptors lost 17 straight games during the 1997-1998 season, the longest losing streak in the franchise’s history.
Bruce Brown (right knee soreness) left the game in the fourth quarter and did not return. His injury is the latest in a series of health setbacks for Toronto.
Despite the Raptors being mathematically eliminated from the postseason, they still have some stakes left in the season.
Toronto’s first-round NBA draft pick this summer is conditional, following a trade deal with the San Antonio Spurs last season involving Jakob Poeltl. The Raptors have the sixth-worst record in the NBA, but if the lottery drawing scheduled for May 12 moves them to the seventh spot or higher, the pick goes to San Antonio.
Hundreds of yellow Lakers shirts flooded the lower bowl of Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, with James — a Hall of Fame star — receiving big applause when he ran onto the court for warmups and again when he and Davis were announced during the pregame introductions.
Quickley and Barrett made an immediate impact, scoring Toronto’s first eight points of the game and helping to make the Raptors' next four points, all scored by rookie Gaddy Dik.
Despite that hot start, the Lakers finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 34-25. Barrett scored nine points in the opening period, and Quickley scored eight points.
Los Angeles led by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, but Toronto cut that gap with a 9-3 run to close the half. Barrett led all scorers in the second quarter with 10 points even as the Lakers led 64-58 at halftime.
Davis and James each scored nine points in the third quarter to open up the Lakers’ game, after a 17-5 run in the final four minutes of the quarter gave the visiting team a 100-79 lead. Barrett brought the sold-out crowd of 19,800 to their feet with a thunderous dunk with 2.1 seconds left in the quarter, earning his 26th point of the game.
The Los Angeles team, aiming to gain momentum in the competitive Western Conference playoff race, did not let up in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 32 points. Lakers coach Darvin Ham benched all his starters six minutes before the game ended, followed by Raptors coach Darko Rajaković, giving both teams’ bench players more playing time.
