The largest Islamic civil rights organization in the United States has issued a new report showing the biggest rise in hatred against Muslims in 30 years.

Zahra Bello is the executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or “CAIR.” She says the war between Israel and Hamas has led to a significant increase in anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian sentiments and hate crimes across the United States.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations reported receiving more than 8,000 complaints in 2023 — the highest number ever in its 30-year history. Even more than after the 2017 Muslim travel ban, or during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after September 11.

The recently released report documents employment discrimination, targeting of pro-Palestinian activists, suppression of freedom of expression, and even students being bullied, not only by other students but in some cases by teachers as well.

Data indicate that 85% of the Muslim community does not report incidents of hatred or discrimination, possibly due to fear of retaliation, losing their jobs, or lack of trust in law enforcement. Bello believes that despite this new report, the actual numbers are likely higher.
