The city of Toronto advises caution at one of its beaches due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in the water.

The city stated on its website Sunday that E. coli levels at Centre Island Beach "exceed" acceptable water quality standards.

Recent results, based on a sample collected on August 16, showed the E. coli count was 176 per 100 milliliters of water. The beach water quality standard in the city is 100 E. coli per 100 milliliters of water.

While none of the other beaches in Toronto have been classified as high in E. coli levels, the latest samples were collected the day before heavy rainfall that hit Toronto on Saturday.

It is known that water quality at the city's beaches deteriorates after severe storms, and the deluge on Saturday dropped over 100 mm of rain on some parts of the city.

The city says on its website: "Swimming is not recommended during and after storms, flooding, or heavy rain."

While the city is experiencing hot and humid weather on Sunday - with temperatures reaching 25 degrees Celsius, feeling like 33 with the humidity - the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) also advises people to refrain from recreational activities around waterways, as many have swollen due to the rainfall.

Toronto remains under a rainfall warning as well, with 20-40 mm more expected at some point today.
