Quebec Premier François Legault confirmed yesterday Thursday that it is always easier for mayors to beg the government rather than manage their spending.
This comes amid pressure from municipalities to cover the deficit in municipal transit companies.
Legault was defending Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault, who faced criticism for her controversial statements, where the minister said last Wednesday, it is not her responsibility to manage public transport in Quebec.
Quebec City Mayor Bruno Marchand, who is still angry over the government's decision to withdraw the tram project from his city and hand it over to the deposit fund, said: I do not trust Ms. Guilbault.
He added: There is no vision for sustainable mobility for her; transportation means developing roads.
Legault said during an announcement in the capital, where the city’s mayor was present: I have complete confidence in Geneviève Guilbault, and what I say to Bruno now is: Let’s look to the future.
He added: I understand that mayors want to get more money from the Quebec government.
He mentioned that his government will continue discussions with municipalities.
