Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier François Legault are scheduled to meet this afternoon, Monday, in Quebec City to discuss immigration - more specifically, the best way to manage temporary immigrants.

The Quebec Premier wants the federal government to significantly and quickly reduce their numbers and better distribute asylum seekers across the country.

Quebec also wants to have a say in selecting temporary foreign workers and in considering French language skills.

Additionally, Legault's government is asking the Liberal government for one billion dollars to cover the cost of welcoming asylum seekers.

The two premiers had already met on March 15 to discuss immigration.

Legault had requested full powers regarding immigration, but it seems he dropped the request after Trudeau's refusal.

However, he continues to say that the province has 560,000 temporary immigrants, which is putting pressure on public services.

He explained that Quebec has exceeded its capacity, and it is up to the federal government to better manage the number of temporary immigrants coming to the country.

Legault initially threatened to hold a referendum on immigration, but he apparently is no longer interested in the idea.

According to him, 65 percent of Quebec residents support the province having greater authority over immigration.

He said in an interview: "The problem is not getting the support of Quebec residents, but making it an emergency and convincing the federal government to act now."

The meeting between the two premiers is scheduled to start at 2:30 PM today, Monday, and Legault is expected to hold a press conference afterward at 4 PM.
