The final match of the 2026 World Cup is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In a press release on February 4, the city of Toronto expressed its "pride in hosting this extraordinary global event" and its joy in hosting the first FIFA World Cup match on Canadian soil.

With the theme "The World in A City," Toronto stated it will showcase its passion for football and multicultural identity.

It pointed out "the city's diverse neighborhoods, united by a deep love of football, eagerly look forward to welcoming fans from around the world," adding that this experience will leave a "lasting legacy" for Toronto "through growing local football participation through role models, better play, enhanced training, and capacity building."

Toronto also committed to hosting a number of fan events during the tournament.

Mayor Olivia Chow said in a statement, "As Mayor of Toronto, I am thrilled to see our city chosen to host six matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Toronto will welcome the world to experience the rich and dynamic diversity of our multicultural city."

In June 2022, Toronto learned it was selected as a host city for the FIFA World Cup 26, the largest edition in the tournament's history with three host countries, 16 host cities, and 48 teams.

The city has successfully hosted other FIFA events for more than 40 years, including the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

In Toronto, the 26 World Cup game is expected to generate approximately $393 million in GDP, create over 3,600 jobs, and welcome more than 300,000 visitors from outside the city.

Ontario is also expected to benefit from over $456 million in GDP, while Canada as a whole is expected to see over $1.2 billion in total GDP from the combined Vancouver and Toronto games.

Sharon Polnbach, the executive director of hosting the 2026 World Cup, said: "As we embark on this exciting journey to host the 26 FIFA World Cup, I am proud to stand alongside many valuable stakeholders across the city to host this global event."

"Together, we are committed to delivering an unforgettable football experience for the people of Toronto, Ontarians, Canadians, and the thousands of global football fans who will visit our amazing city."

Alongside welcoming a record number of teams and players, more than five million fans and guests are expected to experience the beautiful game in stadiums across North America.
