Canadian Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier gave an enthusiastic performance to win the silver medal in ice dancing on Saturday at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal.

While skating to the soundtrack of "Wuthering Heights" by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gilles and Poirier scored their best free dance score of 133.17 points, a season best. They finished with a total of 219.68 points after placing third in the rhythm dance on Friday.

Both Gilles and Paul Poirier from Toronto, Unionville, Ontario, saluted amid cheers at the ice rink after giving the crowd chills at Bell Centre. It is their third world medal after winning bronze twice (2021, 2023).

The performance was not enough to dethrone the defending champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the United States. The 2022 Olympic champions took the gold medal with a total season best score of (222.20) after winning first place in the rhythm dance.

Italians Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri took the bronze medal (216.52).

Marjorie Lajoie from Boucherville in Quebec and Zachary Lagha from Sainte-Thérèse in Quebec placed fifth after a beautiful program to the song "Roses" directed by Jean Michel Blais. They scored a personal best of 208.01 points.

Laurence Fournier Beaudry from Montreal and Danish-Canadian partner Nikolaj Sørensen moved from tenth to ninth (199.91). Sørensen and Fournier Beaudry withdrew from the Canadian championships in January after USA Today reported that an American figure skating coach and former skater accused Sørensen of sexually assaulting her in 2012. These allegations have not been proven in court.

The free program for men's singles was held later on Saturday to conclude the World Championships in Montreal.

This is the first time Montreal has hosted this event since 1932. The city was supposed to host the 2020 championships but the COVID-19 pandemic halted the competition.

Boston will host the 2025 competition.
