The snow that buried the coastal provinces over the weekend and continued to fall on Monday is now turning into freezing rain, according to weather warnings from Environment Canada.

On Tuesday morning, some areas that had received snow up to 150 cm in previous days were warned to expect freezing drizzle.

This includes Cape Breton, NS, where a local state of emergency was declared over the weekend.

Residents were asked to stay indoors and avoid the roads, and the storm caused the postponement of the by-elections on Prince Edward Island.

On Tuesday, communities on the island, as well as in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, could experience freezing rain mixed with gusts, according to meteorologists.

Kelsey McEwen, a meteorologist at CTV Your Morning, predicted that "this means the snow will become more crusty and heavier, and it will be more difficult to clean."

In the high terrain areas of Newfoundland and Labrador, the storm could drop another 20 cm of snow from Tuesday morning until late afternoon, and elsewhere in Canada, weather warnings were issued on Tuesday for very different conditions.

Environment Canada issued fog warnings for parts of southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and northwestern Ontario, warning of “dense fog.”

McEwen said a separate storm system heading east is looming over parts of the eastern Prairies and northern Ontario, and this system is expected to bring snow and rain to the affected provinces, as well as Quebec, later this week.
