Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of the drug ketamine, according to the autopsy results of the 54-year-old actor from the series "Friends," released on Friday.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office said in the autopsy report that Perry also drowned in the "hot tub of his private pool," but that was a contributing factor in his death on October 28, which was considered accidental.
The report states that coronary artery disease and buprenorphine, used to treat opioid use disorder, also contributed.
Perry was declared dead after being found unconscious at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, and investigators conducted the autopsy the following day.
The actor had a history of drug use, but was reported to have been "clean for 19 months," according to the report. The medical examiner said he was reported to have been receiving ketamine treatment to cope with depression and anxiety, with his last treatment about a week and a half before his death.
The report says Perry played pickleball earlier that day, and was found by his assistant, who lived with him, face down in the pool after returning from outside.
The assistant told investigators that Perry was not ill, made no health complaints, and showed no evidence of recent alcohol or drug use.
Perry was open about discussing his struggles with addiction dating back to his time on the "Friends" show in the 1990s.
He wrote in his 2022 memoir: "I loved everything about the show but I was struggling with my addiction which increased my shame," "I had a secret and no one could know."
