After a relationship that lasted two decades, two engagements, two wedding ceremonies, and countless headlines, Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck.

The filing on Tuesday in Los Angeles marks a clear end to a celebrity couple - or at least the second part of it - that captivated everyone and dominated tabloid covers. The duo became known, even before such compound names for couples became widespread, as "Bennifer."

Court records showed that Lopez filed the petition on Tuesday in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The news was first reported by TMZ. The site also noted that Lopez listed the separation date as April 26, 2024. It added that she did not mention any prenuptial agreement.

After meeting, falling in love, and getting engaged in the early 2000s - starring in the infamous 2003 film "Gigli" and the 2004 film "Jersey Girl" - the two split, partially citing the pressures of public scrutiny.

But to the delight of many and perhaps skepticism of others, they reunited after two decades and married - twice - in 2022.

"Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years of patience," Lopez wrote, announcing their quick first wedding ceremony in Las Vegas in July of that year, signing her name as Jennifer Lynn Affleck.

She also wrote, "Stay with us long enough, and you might just find the best moment of your life in the tunnel of love in Las Vegas at 12:30 AM with your kids and the person you’ll spend forever with."

The couple traveled to Las Vegas, lined up with their marriage license alongside four other couples, and were married shortly after midnight at A Little White Wedding chapel, where Lopez said a Bluetooth speaker played their short procession down the aisle. She described it as the best night of the couple's lives.

A month later, they held a much larger wedding celebration at Affleck's home in Georgia, surrounded by friends and family.

Both had been married before. Affleck, 52, was married to Jennifer Garner, with whom he has three children, in 2005. They separated in 2018.

Lopez, 55, has been married three times before. She was briefly wed to Ojani Noa from 1997-1998 and to Cris Judd from 2001-2003. She was married to singer Marc Anthony for a decade after they wed in 2004 and share 14-year-old twins. She began dating former baseball player Alex Rodriguez in 2017, but the couple called off their engagement in 2021.

Throughout, Lopez has been the most candid in describing her journey with Affleck. When asked earlier this year if she was tougher on herself because her relationships have been so high-profile, Lopez agreed.

She told the Associated Press, "Oh yes. One hundred percent. It's made me doubt myself and feel bad about myself at times. It made me feel like I wanted to give up at times. But at the end of the day, I feel like you have to do this thing where you learn to deal with it." "You take the things that can be constructive in this and use them, and the rest you dismiss as kind of hate or other things like that and say, 'Whatever. I know who I am, and I know what I want to do.'

Affleck himself expressed admiration for her self-regulation, stating to the Associated Press last year that he agrees with the idea that Hollywood is unsure how to capitalize on her wide-ranging talent.

Affleck said at the time, "I think she's at her peak. She's doing extraordinarily well because she's taking this step to own what she's doing instead of saying, 'This is what I'm being offered.'

Lopez stars in the upcoming film "Unstoppable," under the auspices of Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Rights Project.

In May, she starred in the film "Atlas" on Netflix. At the end of the month, Jennifer abruptly canceled her North American tour for 2024, saying she was "so heartbroken" to disappoint her fans, but the move was necessary. Organizers stated in a release, "Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, her family, and her close friends."

The tour was her first in five years, to support her first studio album in a decade, "This Is Me.... Now," and the accompanying film, a fictional look at her long romantic life, as well as a documentary.

Lopez tweeted about the title track: "When I was a girl, they asked me what I wanted to be. A woman in love is what I grew up wanting to be."

She said the album is inspired by her renewed relationship with Affleck. But the film was more "about your journey as a person, it’s about one person's journey and what it takes to come back from heartache to love. Or a desperate romantic's journey in search of love." In the film, she plays a character named the Artist, who as a child decided what she wanted to be when she grew up: "falling in love."

But the path was rocky. In an early scene, the Artist rides a motorcycle, crossing the beach, accompanied by a handsome man whose face is covered. Then the motorcycle crashes.

She said, "Not all love stories end happily."
