Kylian Acosta scored from outside midfield in the 99th minute after a ball went past the goalkeeper, and the Chicago Fire completed an astonishing comeback with a 4-3 win over Montreal, securing their first victory of the MLS season.
With strong winds blowing off Lake Michigan, Acosta – a young newcomer to the free agency – lifted the ball after Montreal’s goal. Jonathan Sirois ran to cover but came too close underneath it, and his desperate attempt to pull it from his outstretched hands bounced into the net.
Montreal had taken leads of 2-0 and 3-1 and looked set to secure their tenth point in four road games to start the season before Chicago’s revival and Montreal’s collapse.
Raheem Edwards, a former member of the Fire (1-2-1), received a red card in the 82nd minute and was sent off. Brian Gutierrez converted the penalty from the right while Sirois went left, cutting the deficit to one goal.
In the 95th minute, Hugo Cuvier scored the equalizer at 3-3 when he found the high center of the goal from the left side of the penalty area. Carlos Teran was credited with the assist from a header after a corner kick.
Matthias Coucaro also scored two early penalties in the seventh and twelfth minutes to put Montreal ahead 2-0.
Marin Hila Selassi received a yellow card in the eighth minute of added time in the first half.
Dominic Yankov appeared to have extended the score for Montreal (2-1-1) when he found the lower left corner from an assist by Joseph Martinez to take a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute.
Then finished the match leading 4-3 in the 99th minute before the end of the game.
