Ashley Callingbull has succeeded as the first Indigenous woman to be crowned Miss Universe in Canada.
The event took place at the Capitol Theatre in Windsor, Ontario, and Callingbull was moved by the moment of honor, smiling as she wiped away tears of joy.
The Miss Universe Canada Organization congratulated Callingbull through a post on Instagram, stating:
As the first Indigenous woman to win the title of Miss Universe in Canada and a representative of the First Nations community of North America to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, Ashley's victory represents a historic moment in beauty pageants.
Callingbull is also the first married woman over the age of 28 to win the title, being 35 years old, thus setting new beauty standards, according to the organization.
In 2015, Callingbull became the first Canadian Indigenous woman to win the title of Miss Universe.
