At just fourteen years old, Anaya Suhail became one of the youngest people in Canada to fly a plane after soaring through the sky alone for the first time over the Greater Toronto Area last month.
Suhail told CTV News Toronto from her home in Brampton, Ontario: "This has always been a childhood dream of mine. Whenever I saw planes in the sky, it always intrigued me, and I always felt the urge to do it."
"It was really exciting to fly solo for the first time. It was something extremely unusual. I had done it several times with an instructor, but doing it alone was something very special. My goal was to fly solo by the age of fourteen."
Her solo flight was on July 25 in a small aircraft called a Cessna.
She said, "I felt very special because when you’re up there, you can see the full view of the hills, lakes, and everything around you while you control everything on the plane. You control your altitude, speed, and how you manage the aircraft."
Suhail said she began learning to fly at the age of twelve after her uncle took her to a local flying club. She added that she felt anxious about flying alone, but her instructor gave her the green light, which helped her feel confident enough to soar into the sky.
She said, "I was a little nervous, but I knew I could do it. I was confident in myself."
"I never felt scared of flying."
Razi Ahmed, Suhail's uncle, said he is very proud of what his niece has accomplished.
He said, "I just introduced her to the idea of joining the club, and she achieved that very quickly. She could have flown solo a long time ago."
Suhail said she plans to become a commercial pilot and hopes to someday be a captain of an A380 aircraft.
She noted that she wants to inspire others to pursue their dreams as well, regardless of their age.
She said, "I feel that everyone should do what they want to do to reach their goals, regardless of their age."
There is no minimum age to start training for a recreational pilot's permit in Ontario, but students must be at least 14 years old before they can fly solo. Once they fly solo and meet several other requirements, they can obtain a student pilot permit. They must be 17 years old before they can acquire a private pilot's license.
