Circumstances may force women and girls to return home alone at night, but this may expose them to harassment or other risks.

In this regard, a study on nightlife published in 2023 reported that in the German city of Giessen, located near Frankfurt, 61% of the women participating in the study said that they do not feel safe when walking at night.

For the group whose gender could not be determined, the percentage of not feeling safe while walking at night was 54%, while the percentage among men was only 24%.

Karen Leefeld, a member of the Women's Advisory Council of the German Taxi and Car Rental Association, states that "unlike any other means of public transport, taxis significantly contribute to ensuring that women reach their destinations safely and feel secure."

As part of efforts to make women feel safer, the city of Giessen started distributing coupons worth five dollars each as a form of support for the cost of taxi rides, and since last June, girls, women, and individuals whose gender is not specified have the right to obtain the coupons from the age of 14.

Similar measures have been taken in Munich and Mannheim.

Women in Munich have been able since early 2020 to redeem the value of taxi transportation support vouchers between 10 PM and 6 AM, and since the beginning of this year, the city has increased the support value to nearly ten dollars, stating that the demand for support has been huge, with approximately 3,500 vouchers used by May last.

Although the support amounts are not large, as the average price of a taxi ride at night in major German cities is 20 dollars or more, the support program sends a message to women that this issue is on the agenda of the officials.

However, there is no consensus on the view that supporting taxi rides is the best way to solve the problem of violence faced by women.

For example, there is currently no similar project in Berlin to support women's mobility by taxi, and a spokesperson for the city told the German news agency (dpa) that while such efforts may increase a woman's personal sense of safety, taxis are not necessarily safe places for women, citing data from the United States regarding occurrences of sexual assaults against women in taxis.
